About the Presenters

MODERATOR:

William M. Detmer, MD, MSc

Bill Detmer, MD, MSc has focused his career on solving the "knowledge problem" in healthcare—despite the wide availability of medical information and advanced technologies, two-thirds of clinical questions that arise in daily practice are never answered. Drawn to this challenge in medical school, Bill began developing methods for encoding medical knowledge that facilitate question answering, first with published books and then with software. After completing internal medicine training at UC-San Francisco, Bill studied medical informatics at Stanford. There he created the first web-based search interface to the world’s medical literature, enabling clinicians and researchers to find and discover relevant journal articles quickly.

Bill founded Unbound Medicine in 1999 to provide healthcare providers with clinical answers at the point of need—by combining evidence-based content, advanced technologies, and informatics innovations. Today, Unbound partners with medical associations, publishers, universities, and corporations to serve more than 400 healthcare institutions and 4 million health professionals worldwide.

The latest subject she’s helping demystify is one that seems to frighten even the heartiest academics: artificial intelligence (AI).
